Alison has always loved art, nature, and the sciences. Working with stone brings together these elements in a meditative way, with the rhythm of the chisel releasing millennia of geology within, whilst acknowledging the geometry inherent in the natural world. This process enables a felt sense of balance between the solidity of the material and the fluidity and lightness of the sculpture revealed.
Working with cast materials allows even greater evolution and expansion of the sculpture, with the altered dimension and presence of the piece offering a heightened sense of occasion and place.
Now the sea is influencing her work. Carving on the beach and working where the stones are found, the rhythm of the waves is echoed in the cadence of the carving. After documenting the work in film, photography or print, the stones are returned to the place they were found, with their dissolution imitating the ebb and flow of the tides.
