Wendy
Smith
Wendy Smith’s paintings and drawings reflect experiences and memories. The colours have an emotional attachment and response to a situation or subject, often using a repeat motif relating to the subject and theme. The motif, suggesting something captured and restrained, sharply contrasting with an expressive, free and raw painting approach.
Recent work includes working outside, capturing the immediacy, vastness, colours and atmosphere of the ever changing landscape. The work explores contrasts that are both emotive and as a response to the physicality of the place, represented by using Indian ink, colour combinations, mark making and textures. Inspiration is primarily found, painting and drawing in places that are on the edge of something. The space or gap between wild and contained, inhabited, ordered spaces in contrast to the wildness of nature, painting in the landscape, on river estuaries and beaches, experiencing the atmosphere and creating a sense of place. The environment becomes the materials, using sticks as drawing implements and scratching into the surface of the paint. Wendy Smith studied at Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design and has been a practising artist for over 20 years, exhibiting widely in the UK, Europe and India.
